Fifty million years ago, the North and South Poles were ice-free and crocodiles roamed the Arctic. Since then, a long-term decrease in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has cooled the Earth. Researchers at Yale University, the Carnegie Institution of Washington and the University of Sheffield now show that land plants saved the Earth from a deep frozen fate by buffering the removal of atmospheric CO2 over the past 24 million years.

Agent Often Used in Spinal Fusion Surgery Associated With Higher Rate of Cervical Spine Complications and Higher Fees

Yale and University of Malaya Join Forces to Battle HIV in Prisons

In the hope of stemming one of the biggest public health crises in Southeast Asia, Yale University is partnering with the University of Malaya to fight the spread of HIV among drug users in Malaysia who are completing prison terms and transitioning back into the community. The two universities recently signed a letter of intent expressing their continued commitment to this partnership, which is funded by a $4.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Court sides with firefighters in Ricci case

The Supreme Court ruled Monday in favor of 20 New Haven firefighters who claimed in a reverse discrimination case that they were denied promotion because of their race.

The case, Ricci v. DeStefano, has been watched closely because of its potential implications on both how employers choose whom to hire and the confirmation process of Sonia Sotomayor LAW ’79, who has been nominated to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. The 5-4 ruling overturns a decision Sotomayor upheld as an appeals court judge.
