Friday, April 3: Tour of the NEW Cooperative Arts High School, 3 pm

  • Come see the amazing arts space of the brand new Co-Op High School designed by Cesar Pelli
    • Meet at Dwight Hall at 2:45 to walk over to Co-op where the tour will be led by a student and teacher at Co-op.

Help out at Marrakesh, Inc!, 10:30 am-12 pm

  • Marrakesh, Inc is a non-profit agency that provides a wide range of services for the homeless.  Along with educational programming, they provide a wide range of housing opportunities.   We will be helping them clean up from 10:30 to 12.

  • We will be asking shoppers at Shaw's to donate a can of food on their way out of the supermarket.

Sunday, April 5- Carmel St. Community Garden Spring Workday, 11 am- 3 pm

  •  Come to help out a local community garden prepare for its growing season alongside neighborhood garden members. Preparations will include clearing the garden of overgrown grass and debris, and building beds and compost piles. Work begins at the Carmel St. Garden (take the first right off Whalley after Sherman Avenue) at 11AM. We will be leaving from in front of Yale Bookstore at 10:15 in order to pick up lunch materials at Edge of the Woods natural foods market (funded by YSEC) before starting.

Saturday, March 28: Community Day of Service

  • Come join Yale undergraduates, faculty, and staff for a day of service, and give back to the agencies that serve New Haven! Meet other members of the Yale community who share your interests. Make new friends in a fun setting while making apositive impact on our community. Just a few hours of your day  can make a significant change.

New Haven Home Recovery, 3:30-7:30 pm

  • Prepare a meal for the homeless families at New Haven Home Recovery with the Yale Sikh Student Association
  • Learn how to cook Indian food and a little bit about the Sikh religion
  • Cooking will take place from 3:30 to 5:30, and serving will take place from 5:30 to 7:30.

YHaven Roundtable meeting Saybrook Dining Hall (meet in the back), 12pm    

  • YHaven, a weekly roundtable discussion about New Haven, wants YOU to come learn more about hunger and homelessness in New Haven with our SPECIAL GUESTS from National Student Partnerships (NSP). The leaders of New Haven's branch of NSP have agreed to talk with us about their experiences over brunch. Grab a friend, grab some food and come join us!
  • NSP is a national organization that operates drop-in centers around the country, staffed by college student volunteers, for community members to receive on-site and referral services related to permanent housing, employment and financial stability, affordable healthcare, basic necessities, and functional literacy.   http://www.nspnet.org/

   Unity House, 1:30- 4:40 pm

  • Unity Houseis a weekly drop-in center for homeless individuals that provides a unique opportunity to get to know the people you may see on the street, in a casual and safe environment, and provides homeless individuals with an important inside space to relax and socialize.
  • Stop by for an hour or two on Sunday afternoon to drink coffee, play cards, or chat with visitors, and take a step back from Yale-centered life.

Bring three forms of ID and $11 in cash to register:

  • Proof of residence in New Haven (e.g. a print out of your dorm address from www.yale.edu/phonebooklocal mail to your college or off-campus address; P.O. box mail does not work)

Wednesday, April 1: Social Justice Day

Advocacy Campaign with Junta, 11am-3pm, Woosley Rotunda

  • Letter writing and call-in campaign with Junta against the legislation slashing budgets for Latino social service agencies. Please stop by and help out the New Haven community!

Interfaith Panel on Religion and Global Women’s Rights, 6pm, WLH 119

  • Engage in a discussion about women's rights and religion with moderator Ian Oliver, scholar Andrea Blanch, and local Jewish, Muslim, and Christian religious leaders.

Thursday, April 2: Health Advocacy Day

   Petition for Better Healthcare in CT, 2-5pm, Old Campus

  • Join the Public Health Coalition and the Yale Dems to stand up for better healthcare in Connecticut! We will be petitioning, handing out flyers and phonebanking, particularly trying to rally support for the SustiNet bill, which aims to establish universal healthcare in CT, that has just passed the Public Health Committee of the Connecticut legislature and will now move on to the wider legislative body. More information on healthcare problems in Connecticut and what PHC and the Dems are up to will also be available. Our advocacy headquarters will be right outside of Dwight Hall.

     John Q Film Screening, 8pm, Old Campus

  • The Public Health Coalition and the Yale Dems will be showing a brand-new Frontline documentary called Sick Around America, which addresses healthcare concerns around the country and shows us that healthcare disparities have increasingly become a divider between rich and poor, and one of the biggest civil rights issues of our time. We will also be showing the wonderful movie John Q, starring Denzel Washington, about a father desperate to get a heart transplant for his young son even when all the insurance outlets turn him down. This event will be informative and fun, so come on out and enjoy your Thursday night. Food will be provided.
